I am new to the site and the other posts have helped me fix some problems on my two truck i have an 87 f250 with a 6.9 diesel with and automatic trany i was wondering if i could buy a 7.3 and bolt it right up to the trany or are the bellhousings not the same?
If the 7.3 is from a "E" series truck you will need to swap the motor mounts, swap the oil cooler, engine oil dipstick and tube and also the driver's side exhaust manifold. As Itfox said above, bell housings are effectively the same but don't forget to leave the converter on the tranny when reassembling, I didn't and it cost me a tranny pump!
Thanks, it has a 6.9 with an automatic trany now and im rebuilden the truck i was thinking about putting a 7.3 with a 5 spd in it how would the transfercase bolt up to the 5 spd or would i have to get a different one.
I don't know much about the five speed but If it has a C6 I would keep it, its a great auto tranny, I've pulled stumps with it and hasn't let go yet, I'm not sure I could have done it with a manual tanny without burning the clutch! All depends what you want to do with your truck.
