I've got my 1956 F-250 HD 3-speed tranny all spiffied up and installed but I'm having a heck of a time locating either a shop that will re-line my emergency brake band or sell me the liner material to do it myself.
The e-brake on the F-250 is a 7-3/4" diameter drum on the back end of the tranny with a lined metal band that clamps around it when you pull the e-brake handle. The liner on mine is shot and, although the metal band is OK and I can buy the special rivets, I can't find a source for the woven brake lining material.
I checked with the usual sources and JobLot Automotive said they stopped rebuilding them for folks last year because the only shop they could find quit working on that style of brake.
I found several companies that make resin-impregnated woven brake material but they are mostly in China and are all geared up to sell it in 1,000,000 foot quantities. Anybody know where I could get a piece 24" x 2.5" wide x 3/16" thick (600 x 63.5 x 5 mm) of material like this?
Hey George, if you haven't found a source by Monday, I'll call the truck shop here in town and see what they've got to say. Lots of big trucks up through the 80's had a drum e-brake on the transmission. Maybe they either have a source for the entire band or are capable of relining it. I'll let you know.
You might want to try a heavy truck parts store that sells brakes and clutches. I had one done a few years ago for a mid 70's heavy truck at work. And it seemed like it was not a problem. If you have any problems I can ask them if they still do this and you can ship it to them if you want.By the way I am real impressed with the way you are rebulding your truck.
If you cant locate new parts I'll give you one of my oldies.
Ive several 3 and 4spds out in the junk pile with what looks like plenty of meat left.
I believe that EBrake is the same 48-56 at least.
Well 2speed, you get a cookie and I get the bonehead award. McMaster sure does have exactly what I need and it's cheap too. Don't know how I could look up the rivets on their web site and not think to look up the brake lining!
Earl try Peck's Heavy Friction in El Cajon Ca. The # is (619) 442-3368 and ask to talk to Joe. He deals mostly in heavy truck stuff but has been known to get strange stuff in the past. Tell him Rich Kelley sent you. Good Luck Rich.

I know Rage. As I get older my memory's going. I got the new liner and rivets in today from McMaster (ordered them yesterday) and it looks like they will work just great.
I was in the same situation as you, and I found a local guy who re-did mine for me, but it was pricey and I was mad enough that I went looking hard for alternatives and found McMaster. Good luck!
