I have a 87 f-150, 5.0, 4spd 4x4. The cruise control does not work all the time, what could be the cause of this? Also, why does it disengage when I turn the left or right turn signals on? Is this normal?
Help!
Also, I have a friend who has a 86 F150, that he would sell me for parts. It has a 300, c6 in it. Should I get it for parts, or pass up on the idea?
I ended up discovering it was because of the the clutch pedal not all the up, and so if I just pull the clutch pedal up it'll stay up and the cruise works fine. Why it did with the turn signals, I'm not sure.
Marty86 - some things to check on yours -- if hydraulic clutch, be sure clutch master cylinder is properly filled (also may need bleeding. if mechanical check for return spring installed and doing it's job (not sure if 86 had hydraulic or mechanical operation and there was a transition in 86/87 to the later designs. In either case could be a sign of pressure plate in clutch going. Also check first that the clutch safety switch has not moved in the bracket on steering column inside cab thsi is a plastic arrangement thet works weel but won't take unusual abuse.
Cadman - yours sounds like electrical thru column/multifunction switch possibly the slip ring assembly called a clockspring - search for that in forum. Dio you have anything else thru column that is not working or intemittant? Horn lights wipers etc.
As with any problem with later model cruise control check the brake preeure switch and connector - remove connector at front of master cylinder and inspect for fluid leaking out of switch, recall for fire hazard.
Good luck.
is the 86 4wd also?? if so i would get it if it's not too much $$ the c6 will bolt right up to your 302 if you ever decide to go with automatic. spare axles are always a good thing and they will bolt right up under yours. i don't know when they started putting abs on trucks, but if yours' has it and you ever swap axles with the 86 you'll need to pull the sensor and ring and transfer to other axle if you still want the abs. the cab's themselves aren't different, just the interior design. So if you can get a spare truck cheap the 86 will definately have parts you might need one day.
