!947 drivetrain update

Hi and thanks again to those who responded to my wheel question. That information and subsequent research has led me to reconsider the whole running gear of my 47 1 ton. It seems that a " big " ford 9' rear, C6 and front disk brakes, along with some type of power steering might make a much more drivable and safe vehicle. The motor has been changed in the past to a 53, and the 4 speed is badly worn so it would not be the loss of a perfect original , and I would keep the truck stock in appearence . Has anyone combined a C6 with a flathead ( rebuilt with upgraded waterpumps, new heads etc. for a little extra power ) or is that a bad idea. ( I see that Speedway offers a transmission adaptor for this combo at least ) . If its do-able what rear end gearing is feasible. I plan to do light hauling and cruising. The days of overloaded lumber deliveries are past for this truck. Thanks!

My only hesitation about using the C6 is that it draws a lot of HP, which flatheads don't make tons of to begin with. A C4 uses less power, is lighter, and more readily available. If the truck will not see any heavy use then I would favor the C4 over the C6.

I agree with Gary re: the C6 vs a C4. Also most C6's have an integral bellhousing as part of the case. I'm not sure what Speedway is selling for adapter, but check into it.

If you have a 53 flathead you have the best stock heads Ford ever made and are better than most aftermarket 'improvements'. I'd run the EAB heads. Stock waterpumps are more than adequate - no need for fancy, expensive 'upgrades' here either.

I'd really suggest running as close to stock as you can - you can always add improvements later if you feel the need. Go with a C4 and I think you'll like it.

Thank you. I start looking into the C4. What rear end gearing would be best with the C4?

With any automatic, something around 3.00 is best. I wouldn't go higher than 3.5.

You'll have trouble finding replacement gears for your stock rearend that are that tall.
