Just to be clear about this... you are sure it's not leaking out and it's not being pumped to the other tank (you did the recall on that one to install a check valve?)?
That mileage is soooo bad that I too think something would have to be showing up as an error code. In a gross way, I think you should be able to see some heavy duty tailpipe emissions (as soot build up or maybe even gray smoke under load) or at least it should be running lousy.
If it's running sweetly and no soot buildup ... maybe you have a jokester syphoning gas out of your tank every day (?).
Yes my tailpipe was a lovely shade of black. As far as it running bad. It was a little lumpy on the take off,but other than that it ran fine. I also went through the whole tune up thing first. I picked up some mpg. I know my truck and it still was just not right. My first thought was I was going to need a valve job. Not the case. Did a compression test. 175 across the board. I searched this site and found somewhere about how the coolant temp sensor could be responsible for bad fuel mileage.
With gas at over 3 bucs a gallon. I figured $25.00 would be a good investment. Best money I've spent in awhile.
What I also did was remove the fan and installed a electric fan. The I6 runs to cool. The fan is set to come on at 200* which is not to often. Before spending the money for the fan. I drove around for a week in 70 degree weather with no fan on at all. Now that the motor has cleaned itself up. I am getting 17-18 mpg around town.
Well that sensor is only like 18 bucks so not a big dael and the Air temp sensor is like 12 so not a big deal. Im popping no codes and there is no leaks. The tail pipe is black but its taken years to build up its not caked or anything just average tailpipe. oh and noone is siphoning either.....unless there hanging in my undercarriage with a gas can while im driving....lol
Well I started my truck two days in a row now and both times it starts right up and then imediately stalls then clears right up and idles normal. It stalled once and just died then I started it right up. Its ignites the first time but then chugs for a sec then catches and idles right up...not sure whats up. Still not getting any codes.
You probably have carbon build up. sounds like you might have to take it up the road and put a good woopin on it. If you get pulled over by the local law enforcement. You didn't hear this from me. Plus, I no speaka da englesh.
Hey fellas, im not a big mehcanic, cant even speel the word.lol But my lttle car was exacly like that and no one could tell me what the problem was, they said every thing from -map sensors to leaking tank-, my son suggested the cattiletic convertor, so i gutted it out{couldnt afford a new one]. and now it runs like a charm. Great on gas to, now I think some one is filling up my tank every day while im sleeping.
I want to get rid of my cat anyway....good idea. Im wondering how much of it can be attributed to my tranny, its got 160K'ish on it.....and it make the metallic ching sound when it shifts. I think its got a wore out T-converter. Im thinking that is playing the biggest part since I used to get about 10 miles and now since the trans has been going down hill its gotten worse.
I hate to say the D word here but my father was telling me his Dodge sorta did the same thing, he took his cat off when he was trying to find his problem [other than owning a dodge] with his truck. the cat had a hole in it. Anyways once he assembled the so called truck it ran like a charm, no more sounds from the tranny, and he didnt even tinker with it. Now every time I talk with him he bitches about all the damn electronic on new trucks. If one thing senses some thing wrong then the rest of the truck pays for it.....
