95 PS question
Why do they smoke so bad when you crowd the throttle?
What kind of mileage should I realisticly expect. IT seems I'm a little over 15 city/hwy.
What can I expect from a reprogrammer or chip?
Some claim over 20 MPG. It depends on how you drive it (Don't crowd the throttle much)
A good chip will give you plenty of power but you will need to get the basics done b4 chipping it really big. The Down pipe is very restrictive and should be removed as is the stock air box.
Search this site for exhaust mods and kwik filter. Get comfortable and enjoy the reading, there's tons of it.

Black would mean to much fuel, not enough air. Normal in a chipped truck but not normal is a stocker (well some black under heavy load)
Blue would be some oil leaking past the Injector O-rings... but generally if there seeping a little you might just get a puff of blue at start up. If you got a big leak it would be blue as you drive...
White, if it's cold and your only getting it during startup could be a bad glow plug or glow plug relay.... but if your getting white even when the engine is warmed up... could be related to cavitation... and a possible pin hole in the cylinder wall, allowing coolant to be burned thus the white smoke.

The truck is completley stock.
As far as the smoke. Forget that my buddy said it smoked when I stood on it. I watched, it has a very small amount of smoke, looked a dark gray. But, if you weren't lookin in the mirror while you hammered it you'd never notice it. And it only smoked for a split second. Honestly Alot of my friends have diesels I expected alot more compared to what I have seen with theirs.
What down pipe are you talking about. The one that goes from the turbo into the intake? I'd like to do some performance work to it. What do these modifications due to the life of the tranny? What's the est a chip or a module. Don't some people put straigt exhaust, no muffler or cat.? How loud are they and how much performannce/milage can you expect?
One other thing, this is my first ford. Keep in mind this truck has been very well taken care of and looks like it just came off the show room. What can I do about all the squeaks? I was thinking about pulling some of the interior pieces (door panels, side post covers, etc.) and putting a small rubber washer between them and the body, Any better ideas?
The downpipe he is talking about is the pipe the goes from the turbo down to the exhaust and bolts on right before the cat. I got my downpipe from tymar performance. The guys name is Dale and he is excelent to work with. Installing it isn't difficult, but time consuming. How good are your mechanical skills? A sawzall is nessicary for the job as the stock DP needs to be cut to remove from the truck. The firewall also needs to be bent up slightly so the new pipe can clear. If you get it from Tymar, he has great directions included.
I have mine stright piped (with cat gone a missing) like you talked about. At idle it's a little louder than stock, but once you go driving around it gets loud. Up to about 2000 rpm's it's not too loud.... then after that it starts to louden up a little bit. Loud is a relative term though, for me mine isn't loud enough. I'm thinking about putting smoke stacks on mine soon, that for me is loud!
You might also consider an "open element" air filter Here is what mine looks like. The stock ford one doesn't seal great, plus this one will pull more air than you ever need. There are many variations of it, but most people use a NAPA 6637 filter (also available at fleetfilter.com i believe) a piece of PVC or exhaust 45, and in my case, a 4" collapsable boot fitting. I also put a piece of aluminum scrap over the insulation so the filter wouldn't suck anything in.
With these mods, (and keeping your foot out of the pedal) you may pick up a MPG or 2. BUT it will help with keeping the truck alive longer, and with less problems. Performance also isn't a HUGE gain but it will help, especially if you decide to chip in the future.
My truck isn't chipped right now, I'm running an injector pressure mod called the 5.6K mod. This boosts the pressure to the injectors and gives you the feel of a VERY mild chip, and cost about $10 in parts. There are also variations of that mod also, and i don't recomend doing it untill you become a little more firmilliar with your truck.
squeaks your on your own.... My 97 F-250 that i sold a while back was in show room condition and it still has some squeaks. My new truck isn't the least bit a show room truck, and squeaks probable happen, although i can't hear them over my exhaust and stereo
Hope this helps, welcome to the PSD family.

Personally, I think the conical gauze filters are fine as long as you keep them oiled, but the replacement panels are junk.
