I had a problem with my transmission had a 2-1 downshift problem whenever I braked. I get it "fixed" supposedly. He said it was the axle seals and that I had metal inside the pan. I have 87k on my 01 expedition. I ended up paying $990 for the axle seals front/rear. He told me to take it back in a week if I still have problems. I take it off the lot and I have the same damn problem. WTH, any info. you guys have would appreciate. He also said it couldn't be the tranny with the amount of miles I had. Would it take a while for the transmission flush service to kick in? PLEASE HELP ME..
I can't see your downshifting having anything to do with your axle seals leaking. As for him telling you it can't be the transmission with the amount of miles on it that kinda sounds funny. The transmission would be my first area I would concentrate on.
He told you there was metal in the transmission pan? I'm pretty dumb when it comes to transmissions but I do know when a mechanic suspects trans problems and pulls the pan off and finds metal shavings that's not good. I'm curious as to the thinking here. Was he saying the bad seals caused too much friction and over stressed the transmission causing a downshift? Did they do a flush? I don't think it takes anytime for a flush to take effect, if they did a flush and not a drip and fill.
Was this at a dealership or a trusted mechanic?
Anywho, if it's doing the same thing take it back. Actually, because they didn't test drive it after "fixing" it you might want to demand your money back and look for a new mechanic/dealership.
Is your butt itching? Becuase if you took it in for a 2-1 downshift problem (I don't know exactly what that means to you) and the person you trusted to fix that said it was axle seals, you might have been ripped off. Axle seals are not trivial but I don't think they're $990 either.
I've seen where shops will fix some that you don't really need and not fix something you do really need (so you end up spending even more money) but I really don't have enough information to say you got ripped off.
I can, for sure say you were NOT treated like a good customer/friend.
Axle seals on your Expedition have absolutely NOTHING to do with your transmission! The axles are completely separate, and are connected to the transfer case via driveshafts. On a front wheel drive car, the axle shafts connect directly into the transmission (transaxle), and if the axle seals in this setup were leaking, the transmission fluid level would drop - potentially leading to shifting problems, but this is not the case in your expedition!
