what problems will i encounter if i remove all smog equipment on my motor and replace manifold with performer .this is a holley carburated .vacumm distributor with mechanical fuel pump . i am not sure about the computor though .can i bypass .no smog laws in my state.i am trying to eliminate pinging at moderate acceleration and i dont feel like replacing smog equipment.which by the way is all over the place making this van a real pleasure to work on.will i be able to use the same distributor. i just want to bring this engine back to simpler times.
thats good news .but there is a little panel to the lower left side of the steering wheel that when engine first started lights up emission for about one second then goes off.whats that little panel connected to.
Isn't the timing, EGR, and smog equipment computer controlled on the 87 351?
The EMISS light is just on a timer, I believe. My truck had that too, but I unplugged the module. It's just a way to get the truck back to the dealer for service after 80000 miles or so.
Oh..man.. I missed that era completely. Went right from carbs to EFI.. thank Budda!
It's a bit of a stretch to call the EEC unit a computer, it's more of a dedicated controller, but that's splitting hairs for the non electronic types anyway. If it were my vehicle, I'd strip it back to a naked longblock and add only what's needed to make it run. There's no transmission control to worry about so you could go EEC4 EFI or an old school carb'ed setup.
will the factory distributor work as well. thanks for the info. i would like to tow my 24 foot skipjack fishing machine with this rig but it pings going down hill under moderate excelleration as it is all smoged up.i need to get a timing lite on it to see if im to advanced. what are the timing specs.
