Front end clunk - random
Hope the forum can provide some help. The patient is a 99 4x4, 3.0L 5 speed manual. I've modified the front hubs to be always locked (as described elsewhere on this site) and rely on the transfer case for 4x2-4x4 modes, and have had it this way for probably 10-15K miles.
It has just started to give me random clunks from the front half of the vehicle, as if the front axle is locking up momentarily. Here's what I've done from a diagnostic standpoint:
- no u-joint play in front driveshaft
- no excessive play in fornt axle CV joint
- disconnected the electrical connector to the transfer case shift motor, to exclude electrical issues in the transfer case control - the problem remains
- let out the clutch when the clunks are occuring - no effect
- applied and let off on the brakes - no effect
- changed the front diff fluid - some improvement but not 100% fixed.
My guess is damage to the ring/pinion gear. Any other thoughts?
