Axleshaft Flange Question

Question:

I am replacing my front drive axle (driver's side) and when I unbolted the axleshaft from the flange and went to pull out the axle, the flange came out of the diff.

Is the flange supposed to just come out of the diff like that? It looks like there is a place for a snap ring on the end of the splines (the end that goes into the diff), but there was no snap ring .... is it in pieces inside my front diff somewhere?

My outer race on the outer CV broke apart and I was changing it out when I pulled the flange out. I have a new drive axle waiting to go in, but I am waiting for an answer to my question just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for any info.

Chris

Unless you unbolted the hub (flange) from the back of the knucle, the hub should have stayed in place. The drive shaft just has a big nut on the end, no snap ring.

Joe

I am talking about the other end of the drive axle - the one that has 12 mm bolts (6 of them?) holding it onto the flange.

It is #7 in this pic

The inside of the drive axle bolts onto one side of this flange, and the other side of the flange slides into the diff.

I need to know if the flange is supposed to slide right out of the diff like it did or if there is something else wrong in addition to the driveaxle.

Thanks

Axleshaft UPDATE - New Questions

Okay, I found the snap ring at the bottom of my diff. I was bent a bit (probably from when the cage on my outer CV joint shattered), but none of my gears look damaged.

Here are my new questions:

1. Is this just a normal snap ring that I can pick up at the local auto parts store? The dealership cannot get one in until Thursday, but I have some plans for this week that won't be happening until next fall if I have to put them off.

2. What type of sealant is used on the front differential cover? It looks like a black silicone sealant (similar to the one I used to seal the vapour barrier on my house walls). Is this a special sealant or can I just use the vapour barrier sealant?

3. What are the torque specs for bolting the front diff cover back on?

I have the new drive axle, so all I need now is a new seal and a snap ring then I'll be putting it all back together.

Thanks!

Chris

1. Didn't find an answer to this one, so just ordered one from the dealership.

2. The sealant used is RTV sealant.

3. The front diff cover bolts should be torqued to 20-27 ft lbs.

BONUS:
4. The axle seal is sometimes called a Dust Seal (that's the seal that sits in the diff housing).

Since no one appeared to have had these answers I figured I'd post them up and maybe the next guy asking can use the info.

Thanks for the follow up. I think a lot of people have messed with the other end, but not the flange end.
