Its been Brought to my attention after i completed my Swap for a n M5R2 that thes trannies are notchey Pieces of crap. You cant take off without wheelhop but yull have no problems spinnin the tires for an impressive burnout. but there are people out there who love them. lets hear yir oppinions and some Pros and Cons.
My pro: direct bolt on with the right stuff: peddals, drive shaft, etc.
My Con: Where the DO you find O rings for this thing?
Hello, this subject has been hashed-out alot since I have been a member for a short while, but I can say after 120,000 miles of using my truck as a truck.. have had no problems with my M5OD R2 manual tranny. I have heard of others on this forum and a person I know of that fried one, and the tranny rebuilder that did my 700R4 for my 84 Camaro, that said that these trannys do go out on Reverse and some foward gears, due to weak Sun Gears and stuff. I dont worry about it, at least its not an automatic, where if something goes wrong, vacum or elec. then most of the time you are at its mercy, a mauual, for one is sweet for a truck and have more control if something may go out. Drive em till they go, then deal with it then.
Pro: When I bought a project truck with a broken M5R2 (no 1st and 2nd gear) I drove it home anyway. I like that even BROKEN you could still drive it.
Pro: It's not hard to maintain, and it's the cheapest F-150 transmission to replace. If you were real cheap, a good used unit can be had for as low as $200
Con: It's not the ZF
Pro: It's not the E4OD
If you drive it properly and don't abuse it the M5R2 is a fine transmission. I use my truck for truck stuff, but it's my daily driver too. I tow a U-haul every so often, and pick up hay bales every spring. I don't haul a fifth wheel with it, because it's a half ton truck. That's all I need.
Of course like any other mechanical component, I think the most important thing for keeping life of your man. tranny, is to change and or keep the automatic tranny fluid up to level each fluid check.
