Smaller Size Power Steering Box Available?
I am hotrodding a 56 F100. Using a 1980 Volare IFS front clip.
The PS box sits on top of the front suspension on driver side.
The PS box is large. I would like to run a set of exhaust headers. However, with the 94 Chev LT1 engine I have dropped in - there is not enough clearance between the engine block and PS box to install even the tightest block hugger headers. I have the engine up as high as I can get it - any higher and the tranny will hit the cab floorboard.
Anyone know if there is a smaller size PS box that I could install that will still work with the Volare IFS??
Thanks
Ron C
You may have to raise the engine enough to get clearance and then rework the floor. I don't know for sure, but I would imagine that most all those Mopar power steering boxes are the same. What about a manual box? Would that be an option?
Now, have you considered that the truck is rejecting that foriegn object????
Do you have any PICs you can post. I would be interested in seeing what you got. There are no smaller PS gear boxes for Volare. I have about 3 inches clearance between the shorty headers and the box on my 302. I am crowding the floor.
I see you are new to FTE and have met Truckfarmer already. Better watch out for him, he is pretty hard on guys with Chevy powered Effies.

to quote Yogi Berra... this is da'javue (?) all over again... I removed a Volare for that very reason... had it in ...offset the 460 2" to the right and still couldn't get header clearance...
Called Bob';s F-100 who is the guru of volare and he said raise it up.. I could have done that but it would have caused major firewall rework...
snatched that Mopar puppy out and put in a MII...moved everything back over to the left where it should be. you can see what the volare looked like and compare yours at http://jniolon.clubfte.com look in the left column for the article on volare clip install..
john (it's cool now
)I was expecting the modify the firewall and raise it up. I will think on that some more.
Not sure I want to get into that much modification. May stick with the exhauist manifolds. This will be my driver- not going to show it. The driver side stock manifold 3-bolt outlet flange stuck out 4.5 inches and interfered with the steering linkage. I was able to find a manifold off a 88 pickup that has a 2-bolt flange and only sticks out 3.0 inches, so I no longer have the steering linkage interference.
Don't think I can offset the engine any further to the right without screwing up the driveline.
I deserve the abuse for dropping in the Chevy horses. I really wanted a fuel-injected 302- but couldn't pass up the deal on the LT1. Got the LT1 engine and AOD tranny combo complete with engine accessories and wiring harness out of a wrecked police car for $800. Like most everyone else, I have to build this baby within a budget- so the good deal on the cop car drivetrain frees up some cash for some other goodies like a Ididit steering column, Vintage Air, etc.
I really appreciate you all taking the time to offer your advice.
