I have a 1995 F-150 with an E4OD that is giving me problems. When the battery cable has been unplugged and the computer memory is reset, the transmission shifts very nice.
After about 20 minutes of driving, the shifting gets harsh. It is most harsh between 1-2 and 2-D, and the D-OD isn’t too bad. As well as a harsh shift, other symptoms happen too.
First, if I put it in R and hold on the brake so the truck doesn’t move, the engine will “load” and sometimes kill. I also hear a chattering sound coming from underneath while I am holding on the brake. Then, when I let off the brake (no throttle applied) the truck moves in reverse very quickly (maybe 5 mph) with the engine still at a low idle. Stopping again puts the engine under a “load”. Sometimes shifting from D to R, such as when getting into or out of a parking stall, will cause the engine to kill as well.
Second, if I put it in R and hold on the brake (the engine loads) and then shift into N, the engine revs very high for a second or two until it comes back to normal idle. Also, the engagement from P or N into R is very harsh.
Finally, I get similar results when the lever is in 1. (Engine loading, chatter, harsh engagement, and engine revving when shifting from 1 to N while not moving.) However, if I have the lever in D and hold on the brake, the truck is normal.
Does anyone have any ideas what is happening here?
Thanks, -JR

Reason: Typos
jrypka: My 96 150 E40D does the same thing, when it comes to battery disconn. It shifts the way I want, about 300-400 rpm earlier at light throttle and the rig takes off pretty good even at light throttle, just because of this shift caracteristics. Then after some driving, its gone and back to slow and powerless shifting.
Quicklook you crack me up. Anytime theres a post about the E4OD, you tell em to change the fluid and filter. To be honest, your advice is short, sweet, and damn good.
Sounds to me that the shift solenoids might be a little sticky, or there is too much fluid. When all this occurs, does your OD Off light on the end of your shifter flash on and off? If so, pull the codes via the instructions on www.fordfuelinjection.com. You will have 3 digit codes. That light flashing indicates the transmission noticed something it didn't like, and a code telling you what it is, is waiting in the computer's memory bank.
The other thing I forgot to mention in my post is that I just had the tranny rebuilt, and it has been doing this since I got it back. It is still under warranty, but I have no confidence in the mechanic because I have had it in to him 4 times and he won't do anything about it. He keeps giving me lines that it could be the 4x4 hubs or the fan clutch, or other BS like that. So I figured I'd ask you experts and see if I can find out anything.
Any idea on the clacking? It seems to me like a converter issue, with the engine killing at times, but I really don't know much about trannys.
It sounds like your PCM computer is getting some bad information.
Maybe from the VSS/PSOM or TPS.
Also check the MLPS on the transmission.
PCM = Powertrain Control Module
VSS = Vehicle Speed Sensor or signal
PSOM = Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module
TPS = Throttle Position Sensor
MLPS = Manual Lever Position Sensor
I know it man. It snowed here today. I work outside every day and I'm not used to it yet haha. I'll put on about 20 lbs and then I can work outside all day and night. Whoops sorry to hijack this thread haha.
Sounds like torque converter issues. Sounds like it is locking up when it is not suppose to be. I would have a tranny pro take a look at it. If it sometimes dies that means the tranny is stalling the motor by not turning.
