Question Your suggestions needed, please.

I have a '93 F-150 Custom that has a towing package (overload springs, receiver hitch, etc), but the engine is real loose due to nearly 200K miles of hauling a large over-the-cab camper. The truck body is real solid, and most of the suspension is okay except for front-end ball joints and bushings. The tranny is a E4OD and shifts erratically sometime, but I blame that on sensors and vacuum problems that are easily corrected...IMO.

I am wanting to rebuild/replace the engine and beef it up somewhat. It has a 351W (through the block dipstick) with standard heads. What are your suggestions on what to do to the engine to beef it up without having to change anything on the ECM side of it? I will be pulling a 30' foot TT, and need the mid range torque. I'm not concerned with dragging the TT 80 mph down the road, as much as pulling grades whenever I call it up.

Thanks in advance for your input.

RTF

Welcome. Browse through the engine forum for the engine info and the tranny for for the trans info. This topic has been covered in nearly every aspect.

You have a speed desity motor and that will limit the mods that you can do. The other forums will have similar topics with more details.

the "Speed Density" is the kind of ECU that you have. I don't remember when the date changed, I think in 92 or so, but the other kind is MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor). These are different kinds of ECU's that control your engine.

The Speed Density computers are not set up to accept a lot of real in-depth modifications (extra large cam and so forth), so you wouldnt be getting nearly what you hoped for power increase, and your computer will not like it and spit all sorts of codes at you for it. Hope this helps some

MAF Came around beginning in 1994 on VERY few trucks. By 1996 all motors were MAF for emissions.

Speed Density is the type of fuel injection system that you have. It was Ford's first style of injection by firing all eight injectors in two batches--outer four then inner four. Mass Air Flow fires each injector sequentially just before the intake stroke.

One of the largets differences is that the SD cam has a lobe seperation of 114 degrees and MAF cams have a lobe seperation of 112 degrees. This is not a problem so long as you do not go between the two systems; make sure your computer matches your cam.

There will be more information in the small block forum. Look for a thread called "Went to see the custom engine builder..." It is veeeeeerrrrrryyyyyyy long but also veeeeeerrrrrryyyyyyy informative.
