If you ask 50 guys, you will get 50 different answers;
The 2005 was redesigned for higher payload capacity and stronger frame. In 2005 Ford increased the horsepower on the engines. Lots more things were done to the '05 too. If you like automatic transmissions - the 5 speed with tow/haul mode is nice too. The larger trailer tow (TT) mirrors are worth the extra money, try to get the heated ones with the marker lights. I prefer the 8' bed - but less of those around to choose from.
You're looking at a decent spread of years which will give you a wide cost margin too. The 05's have the 3 valve motors which are more powerful and supposedly run better and have some improvements such as exhaust design over the previous years. I have an 03 with a V10. No complaints here with the gas engine. I am sure some of the diesel guys can help you out with the engine aspect. All good trucks though. Good luck.
Well my it all depends on how much your willing to spend if you have the choice i would go with 2005 in the 6.0L or if you go with the 2002-2004 diesel go with the 7.3 i have heard 2 many problems with the 03-04 6.0 of course its your decision but your taking a big risk some are good but some have loads of problems you also got the choice between the 6.8L V10 or 5.4L V8
