swapping out a 351m
so this is my situation. i have a 78' ford f-150 4x4 with its factory 351m and trans. it has almost 200,000 miles on her. i've been checking out different posts and such and alot of people are saying that a 351m is a boat anchor. im a beginner on engine rebuilding and dont know too much when it comes to engine swapping. i noticed this engine is lacking the horsepower i want from it. its just sluggish, and gas guzzling. i was thinking about putting a 390 or a 351c which are hard to find to put in it. my question is what engine is interchangable with my engine mounts and stock trans. i want the horsepower to take it offroading and have the get-up-and-go power. right now i have a set of 33'' inch tires and a 3 inch lift kit which i intend to upgrade in a few months. i joined this website because i know all you guys know your ford pretty well. If anyone could help me out i know it can be you guys. im just frustrated trying to find out the info that isn't out there.

Welcome to the site and this forum 
Find a complete 400 and swap that in.
It's a direct swap over with no parts to buy.
The 71 /72 400 was the best but a newer one can be built up real well.
A guy on here has a 400 putting out over 700 HP.

With almost 200k on your 351m makes that a dang good old boat anchor.
I made my 351m a 400, end up being a 406 c.i. with rebore.. Its got all the get up and go I would ever want. Enough power to shear axles, pop driveshafts, and trans gears if it locks all four tires down tight. Dennis nailed it. The 335 series engine forum on here will be the place to go for your engine questions. Have fun and good luck.
