Dumb ?

Changing Oil.

I have heard many many people say when changing the oil to fill up the new filter with oil before putting it back on. Here's my question, the manual says it calls for 15qts. Should I put in 15qts plus what ever the oil filter will hold or consider what I put in the oil filter part of the 15qts?

15 Qts includes pre-lubing the filter, an easy way to hold it while filling is to put your filter wrench in a bench vise so the filter doesn't falll over on you. Make sure you lube the gasket on the filter as well.

15 qts is for filter and pan, so whatever it takes ti fill the filter, just put the rest in the pan.

Don't pay attention to what the manual says, pay attention to what the dipstick (the one under the hood and made of metal) says. Put a quart in the filter and 12-13 in the motor and check the stick and add accordingly. I think mine will take about 13.5-14 total including the filter. Draining extra oil sucks.

I thought that if you fill the filter before install you put unfiltered oil into the engine....

Trust in the fact that the NEW oil you use to fill with during service has been filtered prior to being placed in the bottle. The filter is to catch what the motor might let in (through the air intake filter, dirt, carbon, bearing pieces, etc.). Having the filter pre-lubed reduces the lag time of the oil pump filling it after service.

I thought the same thing but there is actually no difference in time it takes for the oil pressure to come up. There was a guy over on TDS did a write up on how much "junk" was floating in new oil in the bottle. Someone actually posted a page from the manual saying not to fill it. I'm the same as you though, it has been drilled in my head since I've been turning wrenches to fill the filter first.

Hmm... I guess there is always the possibility of something getting in during packaging, but yeah, I've always done the "fill it if you can" thing.

I've changed my oil about 50 times and at this point I just put all 4 gallons in. The truck runs great either way for me. And at 200,000 miles my truck uses a quart or two over a 4000 mile interval.

I actually used the dipstick for the first time in about 4 or 5 years the other day just to see what it read. It was ok.
