engine

i have a 75 f150 with a fresh 390. as far as i can tell its stock. runs good but i was wondering, i have a 500 holley 2bbl( i replaced the jets in it. believe they are 83s or 84s. dont remember of hand)on it and my total timing is at about 42 degrees. it doesnt ping but it kinda dogs out of the hole. was wondering what i could do to improve on this. would kinda like to smoke a tire or two someday. wasnt sure if its a timing thing or because i run a 2bbl instead of 4 like my buddies.(cant help it, like to be different i guess)

My guess would be that it's in the timing. I have a 390 in my 76 F250 SC with a 2bbl and it smokes tires more than I want sometimes. I can't tell you what my timing is 'cause I did it by ear after I couldn't get the timing marks to show up with a light.

42* ...that's almost 1 cylinder off

8 x 42* = 336*

I'd say do a timing gear/chain slop test right away.

How many miles on this engine ?

BTW, FTE has engine forums for engine questions.

Some of us visit those forums as well.

This forum is for 73-79 Specific topics. (how things relate to ONLY the 73-79 trucks)

Sounds like the cam timing needs to be advanced.

That doesn't sound like enough advance if you are talking total advance "sittin in the drive way reved".

http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/timing.jpg

Mine went up to 64 to 66 degrees "sittin the the driveway reved".
I backed it off to about 60 degrees.

We both need more information on timing!
No kidding on that. :)
I want to see a graph danggit. :/

Yeah there's more "bump side" guys that have the FE engines too, so the best place to re-state your situation is in the "FE forum"... besides it's not nice to make all these non-FE engine owners envious for no good reason. ;)

I would keep vacuum advance timing between 30 - 36 degrees, any thing above sounds excessive. Reset base timing to 8-12 degrees. Then check total timing.

Try adjusting the air / fuel mixture screws on carburator.

That's about where I thought it should be.

It seems I forgot mention that in my first reply
