I put a new 3.0 in my '91 Ranger and am now considering rebuilding the old one. If I do the project, I would sell the motor for small profit. Some questions:
what would a mild high performance 3.0 sell for? eBay doesn't have much to go on.
any suggestions on the best mods? I am thinking of .010 overbore, mild cam, slightly higher compression, mild chip upgrade, improved induction, high perf oil pump.
I could go full out on the motor, too. Whatever works. Just need some input to help me decide whether to do the project. Thanks, Mike
3.0's are not noted performance engines, there's not even alot out there for them. However I feel your on the right trac, as it would take higher compresion and flow those heads, larger valves, a good cam, bench flow the intake, larger tb and injectors and so on. Chips don't cut it anylonger, to generic. It would need a power programer from sct with bama programs for instance. As far as price, you would need to get it dynoed so you could advertize actual hp and torque gains over stock. See how it comes out first, add up what you have invested and go from there.
Thats sorta what I was hinting at as well Bob, I got a feeling to get any meaningful gains from a 3.0, it would cost more than it's worth. I don't know this for a fact, but with the limited amount of high performance parts even available, it seems like it could be an expensive under takeing, would take a good amount of machine work to say the least, your not gonna just bolt on alot of hp on a 3.0, unless you bolt on a super charger or something. Maybe he has his own machine shop or something where he could do it without costing an arm and a leg.
Well, guys, that pretty much is what I was looking for. I have no experience with the 3.0 except that I have one in my truck. And I sure don't have the machine tools to do a proper job on any motor. It would have to be jobbed out. I only do assembly work. Your comments are pretty much what I expected, and thus have decided not to do this project. Will just offer the disassembled motor for sale locally for a few dollars. Didn't really want another project, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Thanks very much for your input. Mike
There's alot more out there for the 4.0, morana v6 racing has a 4.5 stroker kit for the ohv 4.0 and are making one for the sohc as well. Super six has alot of stuff for the 4.0 sohc and with the mustang now using it, there will be alot more. The 3.0 is a lame duck thats way out lived it;s usefullness in my opinion, thier very dependable and long lasting, I'll give them that, but performance isn't one of it's strong points.
