I have a 1986 with a 351 and a 4bbl. When I rev the engine by flooring it real quick it sometimes pops a flame out of the carburator, hesitates for a second then continues to rev higher. I was wondering if this sounds like the timing is off, it has major engine problems, needs the carb rebuilt or some combination of the three. When I ease into the throttle until it's floored it doesn't seem to backfire through the carb like that. It's got 160k on the engine.
I'd try the timing first. Then the carb adjustment followed by a rebuild if it won't clear up. Lastly, check the valve lash. Major engine problems usually announce themselves with grinding and holes punched through the block... lol
Yeah I think the timing is going to be it, but the carb probably could use a rebuild. As far as valve lash, I don't even know what that is or how to check it. I think if the timing/carb rebuild doesn't do it I'm going to give up! I'm only working with meager tools in my apt complex parking lot on a $950 bronco.
All you need for valve lash is a $5 set of feeler gauges, a 1/2" or 9/16" wrench (I think its that size), a flat bladed screwdriver, a new set of valve cover gaskets and an upper plenum gasket.
Personally, I think if you are adventuresome/experienced enough to try a carb rebuild, that setting the valve lash is not going to be a problem for you. The complete instructions are in the Haynes manual and it should only take a couple hours one afternoon. But, valve lash is only a slight possibility for the problems you are describing.
