Low Idle and running rough

Its been awhile that I've been having rough start ups where as it feels like it wants to stall. I have too hold brake and accelerator to keep vehicle from stalling. After it warms up it does not stall, but runs rough on idle. I do have a engine light, is there anything i can do to narrow down this problem. A friend of mine has a scanner, and maybe he can read the code. In the mean time does anyone have or has repaired this similar problem I am having.
