I wish there were more jobs around here. I figured after katrina there would be so many different places hurting for help that you'd be practically tripping over them. Not so i don't guess.

As you can guess i'm unemployed again, i'm going out to hunt again on monday. I might have to go where the money is at if nothing works out here.

If you lived in Canada you would be in Alberta by now making scads of money.

Companies all over the province are looking for people to work. Some places are closing at certain times of the day because they can't find help.

In fact, companies the oil patch are flying in and paying the expenses for people from all over the world to come work up North

Like it or not, you are but one fish in a BIG pond, and if you want to get at the bait (job), then you had better get aggressive.

BINGO!!!!!

wolfman01 has said it.
In 1981, I was out of work, married, and my wife was 6 months preg. I was desperate, I went to the local drink mfg. (Coke) and applied for a job. I filled out the appl. and when I gave it to the secretary I ask if I could get An interview, she told me that she would turn it in and I would hear from them when they were hiring. Well we got to know each other by first name basis, (her name was Peggy) because I stopped by every Monday to see if they were giving interviews, on the 5th week she sent me in to see the vice president. He talked to me and said they would be hiring someone in the future and he would consider me. I ask how soon as far as a est. time, he said 3-4 weeks, I thanked him and left.
Three weeks to the day I was nocking on his office door.
He told me maybe in two more weeks atleast 3 times, and everytime I would be at his door two weeks to the day everytime.
Finally the last time, he looked at me and said, I guess I am going to have to hire you so you will leave me alone, and smiled.
I went to work the following Monday.
I was always polite and short each time I talked to them, just to let them know I wanted to work for them.

I don't know if this will work today, but it did back then.

I wish you and everyone out of work, good luck.

Excellent replies thus far. You have my empathy. I have been where you are at, and at my age the thought of job hunting is even more horrific. ...

Not to keep re-hashing old news, but a person competing in the job market now has to have a edge. Real estate people use three words to justify the prices of their homes for sale. Location, location, location. Employers have three words to emphasize their needs. Education, education, education.. Best of luck to you. jmo

Sometimes you have to sneak in the back door. About six years ago I became unemployed due to a major layoff. For the past several years I had been trying to get into one of the major defense contractors facilities. Most resume' didn't get an acknowledgment, a few got the inevitable post card -"your resume will be kept on file....". This was in NE Pennsylvania next to the NY border, and jobs were scarce. So while visiting in Maryland, my daughter in law insisted that I send out some resume'. The rest is history as they say. A def. contractor called, it took 3 weeks of negeotiation to land the job, but it was done. Two years later, the company was bought out by a very large company who I had contacted repeatedly for a position prior to this. I went with them. The bottom line is not only education but location.

alchymist is right. Sometimes you have to go where the work is. My father has a saying that he passed on to me. "When you're thirsty you go to the well, the well doesn't come to you".

I agree with moving to where the work is located.I stayed poor trying to live near the place I grewup. I moved to a place with a better economy & have prospered.

if work is tight you have to go and see people. sometimes i'll go around and visit companies and ask if they're looking for guys. if you're lucky they'll have something starting and take you on.

everyone wants a job. not everyone wants to work. pick up that phone and call them back like the other person said, also don't be afraid to just go visit people and see if they have work for you. lot of good jobs out there don't go advertised cuz everyone knows someone, but if you do a little legwork you can get in thru the door somewhere.

In my area there's plenty of work, but an acute shortage of skilled workers who actually want to work. So many people here show up and work long enough to make enough for their next round of booze and/or drugs, then disappear for days or week at time. Seems ike it's rare to find someone who knows what they're doing and has a good work ethic.

You have to learn to be a salesman, and the product you're selling is yourself.

Im not hackin on you at all, but maybe have a second look at your resume, and how you are applying for jobs. I was in a similiar situation when I first started working, mainly because I had no job experiences of any sort. What I did is like a few of the guys suggested. I would find a job I actually thought was worth trying HARD to get, and I would call them over and over. I was always polite and really confident. After the first job I had, I got layed off, but the reference from them was outstanding, and I really havent had a problem since then. I have heard of a few guys that have offered an employer to work for them for few days with no pay, to get their foot in the door. Of course if you did that, you would have to bust your *** off to prove you are worthy of that job. All in all good luck! Theres tons of jobs out there, you just got to find the one!

Talk to you friends and ask them if their companies are hiring. I got my current position by e-mailing and calling the boss and asking about the spot every week after I interviewed. It also really helped that my old boss that retired was a fill in administrator and gave me glowing reviews. It is always good to have a person working for you that is on the in with the perspective employer.

I work for a warehouse company. We can't find qualified employees. Yes, warehouse/delivery doesn't pay the big bucks. But you will have a steady job.

The best thing I can tell you, is to make yourself a 'bargin' to hire. If you are looking at a job that requires a CDL, go get it if you can before hand. Since you are already unemployed does the State Dept. of Labor offer any kind of training assistance?

My short story: my boss needed a new forklift trainer, I volunteered to take the classes. My boss needed someone bi-lingual, I volunteered. Needed someone to stay late, guess what I volunteered. I've now been promoted 3 times in 4 years.

You need to be an asset to the company. A big phase at our facility is: 'What have you done to make money today'.

did you go out and talk to people at all the good companies? even the ones that aren't advertising? if you want to drive a truck go talk to people that have a lot of trucks. my friend's kid washes the trucks and fuels them. that's where new guys start, washing and fueling the trucks and just learning to drive them around the yard. pays a lot better than wal mart too and they're going to pay for his truck license so he can do other things as well.

just be polite and ask the secretary or someone in the yard if there's anyone you can talk to about getting hired. if you're polite what are they gonna do they'll go tell the boss there's a nice person here looking for work. the boss he'll come and check you out. a good boss will like that too. they get lots of resumes from people sitting at home in their underwear looking at the want ads just want a paycheck. but someone that's not shy to go out and knock on doors and get it done that's the guy they want.
