First, My girlfriend was getting annoyed at the oil drops on the driveway, so I succombed to her wishes and poured a bottle of Bardahl Stops Leaks in the crank. I told her I never would but she had her way (and so did I!) Anyway, my 1990 302 now runs like a 3.5HP Briggs and Stratton. Chugs a lot at low revs, stalls when I decelerate (like a standard and I forgot to clutch), idles rough, hard starting. Is it a coincidence or do I have other problems? Just changed the plugs and filters. WTF?

2nd, I noticed a crack on my exhaust manifold. It sure looks like it goes right through (around), but it doesn't leak at all. It is between the 2nd and 3rd port on the driver side (right in the middle). Question is, I'd like to install headers, so who knows what headers are best and will they mate with my existing (stock) exhaust system? And while wer're at it, is there any way to remove my manifolds WITHOUT breaking any studs. They don't look like they are very anxious to be undone.

Thanks in advance

Was the plugs and filters changed before or after the running problems? If before, then possibly a couple wires are in the wrong order or a bad plug.

I agree with thefonz on the swapped spark plug wire. Did you run it after the plug/fitler change before putting in the stop leak or no?

As for what headers - I've got stock exhaust on my 89 and even on the old 88 I had, I ran stock manifolds with my custom 2" dual exhaust and it sounded great. If you are going to undo the manifold bolts I'd start about a week or so in advance with a good bottle of penetrating oil - there are many different brands and I like foaming penetrating/lubricating spray from Wynns - and spray them daily once the exhaust has cooled down. Just remember it will smoke a bit and stink in the morning when you heat it up again.

When you install you headers make sure to let us know which ones you bought and how the install went as well as how you like them - then the next time someone asks "which headers are good for the Bronco" - there will be an answer.

Well it isn't the wiring because I did 1 at a time. I did have a problem with one plug I cracked, but since I replaced it all was well. THEN I added the Bardahl, and the rough idle and stalls began. It sounds like one or 2 aren't firing, but on the highway it's great. When I rev it it's great. Just when I slow down to a stop it sputters and stalls. And when its warm, it doesn't start easily.

And thanks for the scoop on the manifold studs, I started the penetrating oil today, heven't found what headers to try yet. I'm not trying to make a hot-rod, just make it more efficient (and maybe sound a litlle better).

How old are your wires? The insulation breaks down over time and they'll bleed voltage to ground at low idle and work fine at high revs. My 89 had an idle problem and a sputter/lost of power on acceleration which went away once the revs picked up. It was the wires, once I replaced them, everything was great.

The other option is maybe one or two of the boots aren't all the way onto the spark plugs or the distributor cap. Sometimes the wires will slide back up the boot on the dizzy end.

The wires were on it when I got it a year ago. They may well be the original wires. That's my next project (before the headers).

Thanks for the tip.

Start the struck at night when there is no lights around. Take your hood light out too. Look at the plug wires and see whether they are arcing on the cylinder heads. You'll see little blue sparks going from the boots to the cylinder heads. If this is happening then it's your spark plug wires.
