Brake Controllers

Any recommendations on brake controls. I was thinking about getting the Tekonsha Prodigy for my 2002 XLT Excursion.

Prodigy is a good controller, plug and play. I have also used a draw tite. I like the Prodigy better but never had any peoblems with either.

Shop around maybe one of the sponsors has a good price on them.

good selection from a site sponsor

I have the Prodigy and love it. I have a new one in the box, and extra if you're interested. Send me a message if you are.

harness adaptor required?

Those that have installed this in Excursions previously, do we need the 'wiring adapotor' for Super Duty, does the Prodigy just plug into the wiring under the dash? My 2005 X does have the factory Tow Package, which I think makes this easier to wire, but I have not had a chance to look under the dash to see if need some adaptor?

The harness will make it easier so you don't have to cut and splice.

I bought the prodigy and have used it for the last couple of months. The first trip it seemed to work great. Just finished a 400 mile trip and it would not engage the electric brakes. I'm not sure if it is the prodigy or the trailer brakes. We'll be using the same trailer with my Dad's F250 later this week and will see if it is the trailer brokes or my prodigy. I would recommend the harness as it plugs right in under the dash just to the right of the fuse panel cover (on my 2003 Ex). Good luck.

Ditto on the Prodigy. I would suggest the wiring harness as it makes the install quick and easy - and you can't mix up the wiring that way!

Two coast to coast round trips, and one panic stop with no problems.

I just got an '01 X and it has never had the tow brake hooked up so I still have the factory end of the connector.. I also have an extra Prodigy wire set and the wires match,so all I have to do is connect them together and install it.. Question is...Just where does the Ford harness plug into the vehicle and just where do most of you put the controller??? I am kinda leaning toward trying to put it in the little storage tray under the heater controls.. Has anyone done this???
This prodigy is coming off of my '98 'burb and has been used both on my '99 27X Wilderness and my '05 304 BHS Cougar and has always worked great..

My socket is located behind the fuse panel cover on the right-hand side buried behind the cabin temperature sensor pipe. It was hard to find, and even harder to plug the Prodigy pigtail into it. I mounted mine right on the fuse panel cover in front of my right knee. There is no special "Super Duty" pigtail, the standard Ford pigtail is what you need. I used it for two years in my old '95 F-250 and have not had any problems with it. I tow a 9K lb Puma 30DBSS with the X and it does fine.

Aklim was kind enough to take this picture and send it to me to help me locate my "lost" plug!

This is from his 2001 Excursion, with a dedicated Tekonsha Prodigy Ford harness.

Where ever you place it, make sure you can get at the manual lever in a panic stop - I put mine under the tray, easy to see the read-out and can easily reach the lever, something I have had to do!

I have a picture I can send you, or if someone can tell me how to post the picture to the forum...

I did, I did!

On a side note for everyone, while I received my Prodigy unit with only the generic wiring harness, a quick trip to my local trailer shop netted me a Draw-Tite Ford specific harness for my Excursion.

The Ford Draw-Tite harness had the correct plug on one end and the correctly colored wires that ended with no plug on the other end. I simply snipped the Prodigy plug from the generic wiring harness and spliced it onto the end of the Ford Draw-Tite harness.

While the Ford harness cost me $9 bucks plus tax, it also saved me from countless headaches, because wiring is not something I comprehend very well.
