King Pin Installation

I am going to put truck back together but I forgot how the shims were place I thought on one side they were below the bearing and on the other they were on the top part of the spindle. How do you shim new pins and where do you place them. Thanks

Hi Don,

I've got a 56 F-250 and my shop manual doesn't show an illustration of the front spindles for anything except the big guys - F-700 and above. On those bigger trucks at least, the shims are between the top of the axle and the top arm of the spindle. I believe that's how I put my F-250 back together as well.

It kind of makes sense that way since putting the shims on the top lets the king pin bearing handle the truck load and spindle rotation it was designed to take and all the shims have to do is keep the spindle from dropping when you hit a pothole or jack up the truck.
