It was a limb that fell on the window from a storm. Insurance will cover it and i have contacted a local glass shop (All Star Glass, in Katy). They have the Carlite factory glass, which is what was in it from the factory.
Im supposed to take it to them, my question is, isnt it bad to drive it within 24 hours....even though there is really no way around it?
I've always been told that you shouldn't wash your truck for at least two days after having a new windshield installed. The last windshield I got was about a year ago.
I just had mine replaced in the last couple of months and beachbumcook is right on.
The newer windshields drop right in, moulding and all. The guy told me with the types of adhesives they now use it was 1 hour and good to go. No high pressure wash for 48 hours.
I concure with BPofMD. Had to have mine replaced a few months ago. Glass Doctor did it for a VERY reasonable $125-$150. What I like about Glass Doctor is their price, and the fact that they will come to you to do the installation. The installer mentioned the new adhesives as well as letting it sit for about an hour. I took it a step further and for the first 24 hours was careful not to drive into areas that would twist the truck very much. I'd say this is a good thing to pay some attention to as the glass itself is a VERY integral part of the cab structure. I also found out that Glass Doctor (other firms also, probably) was able to get a windshield that has the little dot pattern on it (what's that called?) but does not say Super Duty on it. Seems like this windshield was about $75 less than one that actually said Super Duty on it. Since I had my window tinter guy put an 'eyebrow' in, you couldn't see the wording anyway. Hope this helps.
These days its no big deal to change out a front window, about 3 years ago when I was driving my F150 (pre-Diesel days) my front window cracked and a company, I think allied window came to my place of work and replaced the window in the parking lot while I worked it took him about a hour. Good luck with your repair.
I had a new carlite installed this spring-$264.xx, and it had the "superduty" on top, just like the original. You will need to not drive your truck for about 1 hour. The windshield is designed to keep you in the truck in case of a accident and the glue needs to set up.
Let me just throw this out there:
I have a Bell Valentine One radar detector with the remote display. I wanted to mount the main unit as I high as possilble and maybe a little bit nearer the rearview mirror. Well, with those little dots, the suction cups on my V1 mounting clip don't suck. That sucks.
Oh, well. Next time I need a new windscreen, I will just get the plain jane one.
Can anyone recommend a good glass replacement outfit in the Houston (preferably Sugar Land, TX) area??
Its still a pain. If i had only pulled up 4 more feet....it would have gone in the bed....4 feet back, it would have gone on the hood.
At least it wasnt a whole tree.
Ha! Glass is cheap - priced body work lately? There seem to be lots of "come to you" auto glass places everywhere - the going rate up here is $120 as another poster noted. In my experience those outfits always use factory standard glass. I've always been told that the 24 hours is for shutting doors with the windows up. Most windshields today glue on from the outside, and the air pressure increase from slamming a door can dislodge the glass before the glue completely cures.
Yes, i called a 'come to you' place, he is a one man show. I have had him do windshield repair on almost all of my vehicles, and my parents. I called him and told him that. He said he does windshield replacement as well. I asked about the procedure....and then he started rattling off info about full cut out, close to the body as possible, cleaning, priming, sealing, urethane type he uses and then said "I do it 100% 'by the book', no shortcuts". Normally, i wouldnt believe it, but since ive seen the care he takes when 'fixing', i believe him. He also said if i want anything other than a 'Carlite', then i would have to look elsewhere.
