can i install an air cooler on my transmission instead of the regular cooling system it came with. i plan on putting an electric fan on it. or any ideas will be welcomed. thanks.
When I got my truck, the tranny cooler was a small radiator (about 6" X 8") hung on the front of the truck radiator with twist-ties.
I wanted a really good cooler for both oil and the tranny, so I made my own. They are iidentical units with radiator, fan, temp sender and are temp switched. There is one on either side of the cab bewteen the frame rail and the running board. The parts I used are listed. I hand-made the brackets that hang them.
I'm running a seperate cooler for my C6 in my '53. I made my own brackets for it so it doesn't hang on the radiator. Having driven it like it is, I think I'm going to mount it somewhere underneath my rig and get an additional fan for it. I think it blocks a little too much air for my radiator. Here's a pic:
Cruzin 55, It sounds like your dealing with the same problem I'm headed toward. I too have the original Fordomatic and can't find some of those strange pieces. I'm wondering if a radiator with a built in lower trans. fluid cooler tank and supply lines will do it?
Also, remember that while the radiator cools the tranny fluid, it also warms it - it needs to be between 160 and 190 degrees for the best wear protection. If you are not keeping it the same temperature as the engine coolent, I would put a temp gage in to monitor for the best temperature.
Please state which you have, an I-6 or a V-8, as the original systems for cooling for either were different.
I-6's were "Air-Cooled" w/ a special Bellhousing just for that purpass.
V-8's were "Liquid-Cooled" & had a Special Cooler mounted on the Trans, tapped into the radiator lines.
This could make a difference on how easy or difficult your up-grade could be.

IMHO, a separate cooler does a better job of cooling the transmission fluid than running it through 180 degree radiator coolant. I have alway used separate coolers and never had a problem with transmissions. They also do not need a fan on them, nor do they need to be placed in front of the radiator. I have always located mine along the frame rail underneath the car/truck. Just be sure that the cooler is in a place where air will circulate around it and it will be fine.
Since I want to be setup to tow a car trailer with Willard, I plan on doing like both of my 4.0 Rangers (90 and now 03) have been setup. They were both factory tow packages with cooling in the bottom tank of the radiator and an aux cooler in front of the radiator.
Well, this could explain things for me. I've still got the 223, 6cyl. and Fordomatic setup. Thanks
Look for a Big Air Vent w/ Screen located @ the Top of the F-o-M Bellhousing on the 223 I-6.
You can use both, as it'll double the life or should, because of adding the extra cooling of the Liquid Coolent system.
