I left 1/2 ton of wood pellets in the back of my 98 for 2 days. Now the rear is sagging bad and the "check suspension" light is coming up, but not all the time. I am not familiar at all with this system. As far as I know its a compressor, 2 air bags, and a sensor. It has leveled itself out a couple of times the last 2 days. But for the most part, its sagging bad and its driving like a car with blown shocks. How can I pinpoint the problem without a trip to the dealer? I read on another post about moving the sensor around to see if the compressor will start. I'll try that in the morning. I've had the truck for 4 years with no problems. Help!!
Basically, that is what happened to my compressor when it went. I left a bit of weight in the truck overnight and in the morning it would not pump up even though the compressor ran. I think that the extra load was too much for a compressor that was right on the line between working and failing. Anyway, I replaced the compressor and all has been well for two years. I don't leave heavy loads in it anymore if I can avoid it.
If you are still on your original air pump since 98, it's probably bad. You will also want to check for leaks since it probably was running a lot to keep that load up. A leaking system will quickly burn out a new pump. Also check on aftermarket rebuilt pumps that are substantially cheaper than Ford's replacement, which will also be a rebuilt pump. Try suncoreindustries.com or arnottindustries.com, both located in sunny Florida! Also see strutmasters.com. Don't have personal experience with either but was researching them when my pump blew. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to diagnose the problem, so took it to the local dealer and got HO$ED!

Thank you for suggestions. I'm glad to see there is an alternative to paying such hi prices from Ford. But, now everything seems to be working fine. Two days of the compressor hardly running and now its working fine and the trucks sits upright. Now I am really scratching my head. Maybe the sensor is no good, but for now I think I'll leave it alone and see what happens.
