Well the difference is they got fancier suspension everything uprgraded for off road i maybe wrong but i believe they use rancho shocks they also put in skid plates and stuff kind of give you an idea you also can go to ford's website and build a truck and when you choose that option (FX4) it tells all the information on it
come on now, there is nothing worth noting different between the 2. some cheesy shocks, xfer case and fuel tank skid plates, and cute little stickers in the back that say fx4.
the fx4 is just a little cute gimmick for ford to make a little extra money off of, it won't make you any better off road or anything. same springs, axles, even shocks pretty much.
the skid plates are good if your worried about smashing the xfer case or fuel tank on something, but you can order those as an option.
From the '06 & '07 Order Guides (also included within the Super Duty Options page on Ford's website):
FX4 OFF-ROAD PACKAGE (55F) Availability:
Requires 4x4, All-Terrain tires and Limited Slip Axle
NA w/Harley-DavidsonTM Package (17H)
Includes:
Transfer case and fuel tank skid plates
Rancho branded front and rear shocks
"FX4" decal
It is pretty safe to say that the majority of folks that cruiser the Super Duty sections here on FTE will advise that you skip the FX4 package & just get the skid plates. But, like everything else, it is up to the buyer to decide if it is worth the money.
I got the FX4 package because the truck that fit my needs in all other ways and was on the lot had it on it along with one other option I never use (power pedals)
The shocks were dumped at 6K mi for Bilsteins because the "Rancho" units coldn't control the weight of the wheels on the dirt roads around here and I was bouncing all over the road at any speed. The sticker was taken off long before that, the truck looks much better without it IMHO.
If I was to order a new truck I'd go with skid plates and the LSD option.
Mine has the FX4 package because I belive it came with the sport package. I removed the FX4 sticker and replaced it with an '03 F150 4X4Sport sticker. The 4X4Sport sticker looks much better on the truck than the FX4 did.
I talked to a Rancho tech (at Rancho) asking for part numbers to the FX4 package. He said the OEM were as good as the Rancho's and I would be better off buying Rancho 5000's off of the shelf. My intentions are to put Bilsteins on mine.
