Transmission/speedo problem

I have a 94 f150 4x4 302. The speedo and odometer have stopped working. The auto trans winds out each gear and shifts very hard. What could be the cause of this?

Had the exact same problem with mine.Turned out I tore the wiring off the speed sensor on the rear axle.You might have the same dilemma or the speed sensor itself is bad.
