i have a lincoln towncar 1990, My fuel pump isnt turning on, this happended before the wires that went into the alternator melted, i had to replace the alternator plug, but this time it wasnt the problem, i followed the alternator wires to the battery and saw that some wires were bare and they might have touched some metal, what would that short out?? i checked the fuelpump relay and found out that is wasnt getting power, but some were, what exactlly do i need to replace it?
I have no reference for a 1990 but if it is like a 1992 then:
With the key on you should have power on two wires at the fuel pump relay. One of the wires is a Pink wire with a black stripe and comes from a 20 Amp fuse, fuse "F". The other power wire is a Red wire and comes from the EEC power relay. The EEC power relay gets it power from the 30 Amp fuse "T" over a Yellow wire with a Black stripe, both fuses are in the Engine Compartment Fuse Box.
Does the EEC power relay click when you turn on the key?
Does your head lights come on?
What does "but some were" refer to, what is getting power?
I do not know if there is a forum for a Lincoln towncar or not but did you notice that this is a truck site?
The computer grounds the fuel pump relay coil to activate the relay. The fuel pump relay coil power comes from the EEC relay when it is ON. Therefore it takes two things to turn on the fuel pump relay. The impact sensor is also in the circuit to the pump. The computer also turns off the fuel pump relay a few seconds after the key is turned to RUN if the engine is not running.
