The inline is on the drivers frame rail, inside, by the firewall. Follow the fuel lines and you should see it.
You may not have a canister filter. It should unscrew if you do. I remember in my 87 and up manual (which I use for my 86 EFI alot) it made no mention to the canister filter. My 80 up book (more carb stuff with EFI add-on) mentions it. I had a fuel pressure issue and replaced the in-tank and frame pumps, inline filter and FPR. It was the canister filter that was clogged.
Mine unscrewed pretty easy, kinda like taking off an oil filter. In fact that's what I used, an oil filter strap wrench.
If you've got time, get one from the yard and see if you can get it apart. This way 1. you'll have a spare, 2. if you break it, it won't be the one on the truck

An older 85 F-series had a type 3 fuel system, here is its diagram:

Note a 1990 E-series still had the old type 4 fuel system.
These diagrams do not apply to a 460 or single tanks.
