Stray Voltage

I have been working on my Buddys 1992 F250 with the 7.5 motor. He took the bed and bumper off and replaced it with a flat/dump bed. The lights went with the regular bed when he sold it. He decided to go with LEDs on the new bed. After hooking all the lights up we noticed that the brake and signal lights had a faint light to them when the truck's ignition was in the run position and no lights were on. I traced the wires back and found that there was 5 volts in the brake/signal wire.

What would cause this and where should I start looking for this stray voltage?

Ouch, that might be hard to find. Process of elimination - start tracing the wiring back, unhooking as you go, if the voltage disappears as you unhook something - it's still upstream. Sounds like you could be missing a ground somewhere.

This could be coming from a trailer brake controller. Does he have one?

if its power coming in from another circuit, you can start pulling fuses one by one watching the voltmeter on the lights and see when it goes off. Then at least you know where its coming from.
