ive got a 03 explorer,v8 4.6, 4x4 with tow package(gear ratio 3.55 i believe) and im getting some vibration when i turn from a stop..what is it? i want to say its the 4 wheel drive, but it goes into 4x4 high, and low just fine..
My transmission also clunks when putting it into reverse, or drive sometimes..Even when im on the freeway, it will some times clunk when i let off the gas, then bring it back on..
Whats going on here?? i really like the car, but if it is going to cost alot to repair, i wont be keeping it anymore
If you have the tow package (2" receiver and 7-pin connector) then you've got 3.73 LS rear gears, not 3.55; the clutch packs in the LS can cause the vibration you're describing.
Some Gen III Explorers had the wrong formula tranny fluid installed at the factory; if yours didn't have the additive fix installed you might try that, but it's probably too late to help if that's the problem.
Your service manager MIGHT do the tranny additive for free if it's needed and wasn't done; the worst he can say is "no". It might help.........
If you have the 3.73 LS rear end and the clutch packs are causing the vibration on take-off, then the rear end will have to be rebuilt; my guess would be $1000-$1200, but your service manager can tell you for sure if that's your problem. Good luck!!!
man i bought this car from ford as a used but certified car...not even 5 months after owning it its already causeing problems..i knew i should of gone to chevy instead
My wife's 2001 explorer pops like something is binding when its in 4high or 4 low but not any other time. It did it on an incline and also flat ground. Any ideas? It sounded like it was in the front end too.
