A guy here in town used to have a 04 Sd, he was running a 4" exhaust, Cold air intake, and an Edge tuner. Anyway, I could hear him coming (the turbo whistled loader than any ive ever heard ever) from approx. 1/4 mile away. This mad the truck sound awesome as hell.
I have since talked to him many times, he said that the truck already had all of the mods done to it when he bought it. He sold the truck several months back so I never got to really look deeper into it.
Anyway, I went out and bought the 4" silverline exhaust from the turbo back and cold air intake, just as he had. I haven't bought a tuner as of yet though.
My truck now has a nice whistle to it but NOTHING like what his did.
He said that he thought the guy before him had removed some kind of plate inside the turbo. Does anyone know of the plate or disk that he maybe talking about. My truck is a 06 6.0, not sure if the turbos are the same or not.
Any information on making the turbo scream (whistle) very loud would be great.
Thanks,
The truck with the real loud turbo sound out of the exhaust may have been an '03. The 03 6.0s have insane turbo whistle. What you can do to increase the sound in yours is straight pipe the exhaust... and that's about it. You could swap in an '03 turbo or some sort of aftermarket turbo, but for your stock turbo, there's not much to be done other than free up the exhaust, which is where the turbo whistle sound emits from.
Regarding removing something from the turbo... he may have been thinking of the turbo on a Cummins, which has a silencer ring, which many folks remove to make the turbo whistle more audible.
As Ryan said, different turbo I'm afraid. And again, straight pipe will make it the loudest, but you'll probably get a droning while driving on the highway. I have a Silverline 4" turbo back and an intake. I love the sound!
Thanks for the replies,
Yes I did remove the cat converter. And It does sound very nice. Was just hopeing there was an easy way to make the turbo whistle alittle louder, with out spending a truck load of money. I'm a new user to this site and already I found lots of information to questions Ive had. Thanks again for the information...
Ive got an 04 350 that has an insane screech. to the point of hating it. I would like to tone it down some. I did the magnaflow exhaust from the turbo back with the converter installed and a resinator and it is still insane. Any thoughts on putting the resinoator on from Banks? (the turbo outlet pipe).
If it's a screech you may have a cracked y-pipe/egr inlet pipe. I developed one on my 04 in the bellows/flex section of the pipe and it sounded like one of the old factory whistles except really high pitched. Lots of fun to change.
There's nothing you can do on an 05/06 turbo to make it whistle louder. The 03's were the loudest. 04's had a silencer ring you could remove, but it doesn't help performance at all and the whistle isn't really any louder IMHO.
The "cough" you hear is also refered to as a turbo "fart" and is perfectly normal. What kind of airbox do you have??? If it's an aftermarket/cotton gauze, I recommend you remove it and go back with the factory unit. It will give you as much air as you need and a LOT more protection than the A/M. The aftermarket unit will make the fart much more pronounced. I have the magnaflow 3.5/4" exhaust on my 04 straightpiped and I don't have that screech you're refering to.
I don't want to hijack this thread, but with all these descriptive sounds, can somebody tell me if I need to worry about a very short (1/2 to 1 second) screech sound that occurs occassionally when I accelerate. It happens between 1250 to 1500 rpms and only from either a standing start or when I've been coasting long enough for the turbo boost to drop to 0. I'm thinking something to do with the turbo spin up? But is it normal? Truck has about 5000 miles on it.
Thanks
