Welding under hood mess up electronics?

I was welding a broken bracket last night on my 87 Bronco that holds on the fender and after that when I started it it ran for about 15 seconds then quit and does not have spark anymore. Could the welding voltage some how have messed up some electronics?
Thanks in advance.....Roy

Absolutely. Unless the coil was disconnected the back feed through it could easily fry it. Same with the substrate in the battery plates if it was still connected. The frame of the truck is PART of the electrical system circuitry in that it provides the negative side of the circuit. A backfeed of power through the frame has the potential to damage any of the devices that have coils in them. Ignition, relays, dimmers, electric motors, even the lamps depending upon the conditions at the time of the surge.

There appears to be no power to the coil, any ideas?

Follow the WHITE/LT. BLUE wire back from the coil. There is a fusible link in the line somewhere between the coil and the ignition switch. The wire changes color on the igntion switch side of the fusible link to RED/LT. GREEN. Find the fusible link with these two wire colors and check to see if it has blown. This is the most likely failure point especially given the manner in which it was probably blown.

IF you have to weld on your truck make sure that your ground is within inches of where you are welding. This is your best insurance but even it is not fool proof.

When welding on any vehicle you should completely disconnect the battery, both positive and negitive sides. -Ed
