Smile Rebuilt my starter today

Man, was my motor cranking slow. Went down to the Ol'timer, and he let me help him rebuild my starter. I bought my truck used with 66k, and aparantly somebody had already replaced it with a Nippon-Denso unit. Well Mr.Hamilton said those were a better unit than the Mitsubishi and proceded to tear it apart. My bearings were dang near seized, and 3 of the brushes were bottomed out. We put new bearings on the armature, spot welded new brushes in, and cleaned up the commutator. She cranks over like a top now. $52 parts and labor.

Well rats. I mean, great deal for you, but when I saw the title I was kinda hoping to see a step by step with part #'s and maybe a couple of pics.

did you use the commutator lathe and smooth out the commutator? we have a commutator lathe at school, boy is that thing neat. we all took turns machining smooth a commutator from a Delco-Remy 40MT.

Same here. That's good info to have. Get it together for a sticky.

BTW Kris, was there anything left of the commutator after the entire class trued her on down?

LMAO, yes we only went across it twice. the commutator is basically half the height of a soda can, and there was only 12 of us. took for-everrrrr

Kris, all BS aside, that sounds like one heck of a school having that lathe. I know I would be hard pressed just to find a shop here locally with one. You're lucky to be there. Sounds like a great shop teacher too.

You don't even want to know what my shop class was like. I remember trying to spot weld sheet metal patches to teacher's car mufflers to repair leaks. What a joke. I usually started small, and ended up with a big patch. Wasn't about the repair, it was about the welding experience. That sort of thing you know. There were a lot of mufflers replaced too.

No pictures guy's, sorry. But I will tell you that it was easier than I expected.

1. Break Down Motor
  1. Take motor end cap off
  2. Pull brush holder out
  3. Remove armature, place in padded vise, inspect bearings.
  4. Remove siezed bearings (in my case)
  5. chuck up armature in lathe and clean up commutator.
  6. Install new bearings using arbor press
  7. Replace brushes. This required cutting off the old one, and grinding down the spot where they were soldered with a dremel tool.
  8. Using a harbor freight spot welder and silver solder, install new brushes. It helps to have another hand during this procedure.
  9. Now reverse teardown procedure.
2. Inspect plunger and contacts to make sure they're not to badly worn. Refer to this link for tips.http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/Nippondenso.html

This is clearly an awesome shop. Are you considering being a diesel mechanic?

No part numbers? Where'd you get the bearings and brushes?

6200 and 6003 were the bearing sizes. He had them on the shelf, along with the brushes. I didn't get the part # for them.

I think my starter may be going out because it takes a few seconds for the starter to really start spinning fast. I already replaced the batteries, so I'll be looking at the starter next. I doubt I'm up for rebuilding the starter, but have replaced a few gas engine starters, is it as straight forward to take off and replace?

Thanks,

Sledneck
