Cleveland BH bolt pattern

A true cleveland should bolt up to a big block tranny, right?!? (ie modified/460 tranny)

A Cleveland shares the same bolt pattern as the 289, 302, and 351W engines. So, no, the 351m's, 400's and 460 trannies won't bolt up. Here's a link:

Ok so please help me understand why it is and '335' engine....I can't really see any similarities between M's and the big C

The difference between the 351C and 351M/400 is the latter has a taller deck height and most of them have the 429/460 bellhousing pattern to accomodate the torque from the 400. There are some dimensional differences in bearings also for strength. You can find all the dimensional differences in the back of a Ford Motorsports catalog and this site may help:
