I have a 1986 with a 460 and the factory Carb. The primary is stripped. Does anyone have any ideas on fixing this? I just had the factory carb rebuilt 4160) and the vehicle is a 1985 California version.
any ideas?

On the front of the carb (radiator side) is a cylinder that I believe is a fuel filter. This filter screws into the carb. the threads in the carb seemed to be stripped. My mechanic can't seem to figure out how to fix this. The carb seemed to be stripped when I bought it ...it has a had a very slight fuel leak that started right after I bought this vehicle.
If your are talking about the part where the fuel line attaches to that housed the filter, I had the same problem- contantly had gas dripping out onto the hot manifold. After trying a few different gaskets without much luck, I wrapped the threads in teflon tape, snugged it up carefully and has been tight for at least a year now.
I'd try teflon tape first. If the threads are really stripped (nothing to screw in to) you might see if you can drill and tap it for 1/4"NPT threads and insert a 1/4 x 1/8" bushing. If there's not enough "meat" there to go up to 1/4", you might have to JB Weld a hose barb into the carburetor and use rubber hose to mount an inline filter.
There are also filters that seal against a gasket on the face of the carburetor. I don't know what the thread size is, but if it's bigger than the 1/8"NPT that you have now you might be able to drill and tap for the larger size and try to face off the front for a gasket.

JUST FOR YOUR INFO. On 1986 F250s with 460 (calif emmisions) the factory carb is a 4180. on the outside it looks like a 4160 but that is where the similarities STOP. meter blocks different, uses a dual stage PV, air fuel adj on base instead of on the metering plate, Jets, PV, floats will interchange.
A rebuild kit for a 4180 about $90. 4160 $30. I run a 4160 on an 86 F250 4x4 460 (calif emmisions) I replaced the 4180 after I found out the cost of kits.
As for your thread problem I agree teflon tape. If that doesn't work take out the filter and JB weld the housing in and add an inline filter. Besure and let the JB dry good before running the engine. 24 hours.
Check with Advanced Auto Parts or Autozone in the "HELP" line of parts. There is a fix for your problem. It is a replacement fuel inlet fitting that has longer self tapping threads. About $5 or $6 as I recall. It's best to remove the float bowl and put it in a large vise to do the installation. Be Careful! It's very easy to crossthread and if you do, you probably can't stop the leak.
