I want to install an intake on my '06, but I wanted to get some feeback from others PSD 6.0 owners that have installed this kit. I want to know if you've had any problems, and what they were. Also would like to know how many miles you have had in on your truck and what conditions (paved roads, dirt roads or both). Thanks for your feedback.
Should we not find it concerning that these aftermarket intakes only talk about gains in airflow, but never mention their cleaning efficiency? You can get absolute maximum airflow by removing the top of the airbox and running without any filter. However, nobody would do that as it would dust an engine.
The stock filter stocks 99.99% down to 1 micron in size. I'll stay stock and not put my warranty in jeopardy.

That's one of my concernes too, but the power gains and fuel economy advantages caught my eye. That's why I wanted to hear from other that had done this mod. already and hear how many miles they've had it on their truck.
I got the AFe stage 2 on my truck and the cel light came on. Made a phone call to the product support and they are sending out a new tube (free) where the maf sensor goes. Guy said that that happens in about 4% of the trucks that install it. The new tube repositions the sensor which fixes the problems.
Only problem is that it takes 5 to 6 weeks to get it. Trucks runs great, although to be honest, I don't really see much of a performance enhancement. The turbo sounds better. And it looks cool. I guess you can never have enough bling bling......
Consider the NEW AFE Stage II Mega system, much larger filter, housing mounts the battery like the Stage II on a 7.3 etc. The max flow from any intake on the market and if you want to get the Pro Guard 7 filter version it filters within 1/2 of 1% as well as a quality paper filter. 1/2 of 1% is next to nothing!! We just got them in a week or so ago and have sold over 100 and customers that had the older style enclosed Stage II that have upgraded are very impressed with it. We have a sale price on it currently too!!

Mark,
What is the cleaning efficiency of the AFE system? I could not find it on their website.
Most intakes show improvements "up to" in the higher RPM ranges of 3,000rpms or so... yet no one drives their truck in that range.
Second, unless running perforance mods there is no need for any additional intakes.. but with more air flow there is less filtering capability.
Diesel Power Magazine had an article that unless one adds "more fuel" to the fuel/air mixture through a chip or tuner, an intake only will not add anything worth the expense and possible warrenty issues. More air and same fuel = equals same HP and same performace. Any "slight increases" is marketing hype and the industry has NO STANDARDIZED test for these tests... so each manufacture makes up their own test, own results and posts what they want to promote... hense the reason for no mention of filtering capability.
By the way, if they do mention a filtering capability is it at the airflow requirements of the motor or at a slower rate so the filter can clean the air???
By the way... "stock system" should have been a choice for the poll.
The mod companies are always involved in the threads when somebody is thinking of buying. They shout 'Magnusson Moss Act' as a reassurance that a manufacturer can not deny warranty. However, MMA has nothing to do with modifications -- it keeps denials from happening if an owner uses a like part that is not the manufacturers. A modification is not a like part.
These kits are all about airflow in their marketing. Yet rarely do they have anything on cleaning. I did find on K&Ns site that their "goal" was to filter 98%
of matter down to 5 microns. The stock filter gets 99.9% of matter down to 1 micron.
I don't see where it is worth it to pass more matter into the turbo and engine with a modification that would put warranty repair in limbo. The stock filter is the best on the market, at least spend money on something else IMO.
Thanks for everyones input, I have decided to stick with the stock intake system and filter. Although I will be running a high performance tuner from ATS, it's not worth destroying a 4,000 dollar turbo.

Just remember... run a tuner and you may need larger intakes and larger exhaust???
As soon as you add more fuel and boost (per the ATS tuner), you create more heat and more demand for air. If you can not get more air due to the stock air filter system... then no gaiin in the tuner... or not as much as desired. More heat from the tuner means higher EGT's and the need to get rid of the exhaust and heat via a larger exhaust...
Just remember that adding one mod may mean adding others that you may or may not want to pay for or add.... that's all... just need to look at the big picture on what system(s) you are buying and what performance you want out of your truck.
Lets know or post some pics of your truck when your done.
Thanks. My friend has the Edge prgrammer on his '04 PSD and he's only running cat-back 4" exhaust, with the stock intake system. I know that the ATS tuner is a better unit than the Edge. I know the guys at ATS so, I'll ask some of them about the intake, I'm already running the ATS 4" 409 stainless steel exhaust from the turbo back. That was an expensive upgrade ($860 after tax) but it was well worth it, the sound is awesome and very noticable power gains and throttle response. I'll take some pics when the truck is completely done (lift, tires, wheels) and post them. It may be a while though.
