My speedometer reads low by 9% on my '65 F350 (1 mi. in 61 sec. = 59 mph, speedo reading 54). According to the data plate there should be a 5.13 axle, but my rear is actually 4.88, which is 5% error. Tires are 235-85R16, same height as the original 7.50R16.
I can't use a correcting gearbox unless it will fit on the back of the speedo (the trans end plugs into the extension housing, doesn't screw in). So does that little gear on the end of the cable (driven gear) interchange? I don't want to have to take the parking brake and extension housing off just to change the driving gear!
Ford Speedometer Driven Gears, The Gear At The End Of The Speedometer Cable, Come In Different Tooth Numbers, Ranging From 16-21 Teeth. Changing To A Smaller Tooth Number Will Increase The Speedometer Speed For A Given Road Speed, And Vice Versa.
