This weekend I installed one of Mark's 5" kit with the muffler. I put the muffler on with the words inlet facing the turbo. I do have a little bit of drone now. I noticed that with the way I have it installed the dimples in the muffler face the cab, if I reverse the muffler and face the dimples out will it give me less drone in the cab?
do you mean the dimples are oriented currently as to "capture" the exhaust as it passes through the muffler? i had mine oriented where the smooth part of the dimples were facing the exhaust flow, and the sound was a whole lot better.
an even better idea is to find a piece of 5" pipe and replace that muffler!

Yes, currently they are capturing the exhaust. I am wondering if this is what is causing the drone.
Also I ordered the 6" tip does everybody usually cut some off the tailpipe or do they slide the tip all the way on?
I cut my pipe just after that last bend ( just enuff to get about 2 -3 inches of pipe in the tip). The tip makes a big difference in sound. BTW: I have no muffler and still get just a little drone
Just slapped it on the end without cutting with a NAPA clamp. Didn't want to cut first and it sounds just fine so left it alone. I have the muffler oriented like yours and have a slight, and I mean barely perceptible drone at 50mph. Cannot duplicate at same RPM in a different gear which makes me wonder if it is exhaust related.
I actually mounted my 6" tip,From mark R, out on the end of the pipe first before i did any cutting as a test to see how it sounded.. Looked funny stickin way out the side of the truck, but sounded funnier. To me it sounds deeper if you just slide the tip down in the 5" pipe.
got to love marks 5" i strait piped mine and got marks 18 inch long 6inc tip.i cut the 5' inch back into the tip about 10..sounds great..very little drone..eaven painted the 5' pipe with black stove paint and the clamps with silver stove paint(good for 1200 deg.) the tip i got a stainles band for a touch of class from a big truck crome shop...

In doing research on the drone found in some 5'' exhaust systems, I called a mechanic that does performance mods and aftermarket exhaust. He said that exhaust gasses have mass that has to be moved out the pipe, and with a stock or even a mild tune they tend to "pile up" in the pipe, thus causing a drone. He said 4'' is all you need for all but extreme HP tuning and that 5'' is overkill, but we all know that- don't we. So if you want to make an impact on you listening audience- bigger is always better.
Do tips make a big difference in sound? I've got a 5" from Summit with the muffler installed and its just not that loud. Just wondering if I should put a tip on it
