Has anyone out there replaced the notorious timing chain tensioner themselves successfully? My 1998 SOHC motor has been due for sometime and ford hasn't been a big help since I'm out of warranty. I found a kit online but I'm not sure if it actually has everything I need. Any assistance in which direction to go as far as parts, tools, cost, etc. would be very much appreciated. Thanks a lot!!!
I got an 02 and there is a tsb that has a kit with everything from ford. up here in canada it cost 300$ and you get the upgraded tensioner, chain guide, jackshaft and crankshaft sprockets, fasteners, primary timing chain, and front cover gaskets. I have not had this kit installed and I was told that you need a special tool to adjust the cams???? I will be looking to get this done soon as I am in need of getting rid of this knockin and rattle'n. Good luck with this job and I want to hear how it goes as I need any info on this problem. Oil doesnt seem to help my situation I dont know about yours??
Has anyone ever heard of having to lift or remove the engine to do a primary chain/tensioner replacement? I have done some research and I'm still not completely certain if the cam position is affected by doing a primary chain only replacement. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Thanks again guys!!
IM not too sure but I know that there are two chains maybe three??? one is on the top(front) and the other is in the bottom(back).I was told by ford that it would take approx. 8 hours to install that kit which involves removing the engine. Thats why it is so exspensive and also why you need that special tool for adjusting the cam when you reassemble. I think. I hope this helps you????
