I have an 85 F250 with I believe a C4 tranny. When I first start it up it won't shift into gear. If I let the truck warm up for a couple of minutes, I have no problem. The fluid level is fine. I think that the pump and maybe some seals are wearing out. Am I going in the right direction? Is the tranny ready for a rebuild?
Also could anyone tell me how hard it is to rebuild an automatic and approx price? Thanks for help in advance.
you have a C6, this tranny from what i hear is not to hard to rebuild. I would first try a fluid and filter change and also check/replace the vacum modulator and all vac lines leading to it. once you have done this and problem still continues then do a search on the web for C6 rebuild etc.. or ask around to some local shops, the C6 is pretty cheap to have rebuilt as well.
I think there is a drain plug on the converter too, so don't forget that. Are you checking the fluid when it is warm and running? If it has been sitting for a bit, some fluid drains out of the converter back to the pan and can give you an inaccurate reading on the dipstick.
I do check the fluid warm with the truck idling. Thanks for the info on it being a C6. I will try changing the fluid and filter. I will check the vacum modulator as well. Thanks again!
Where is the vacuum modulator on a AOD tranny? The metal vacuum line actually sucks air in...my dad says its not supposed to do that. This is for the truck listed below.
The tranny shifts too early....slows down going up hills....no acceleration at all. I let another older f150 blow me away. My truck is loud but his beat mine.

the AOD doesnt use a vacum modulator. there is a TV cable that needs adjusting but if not done properly will toast that tranny fast. get yourself a haynes manual because it sounds like you and your dad need to get familiar with what your driving.
try a tranny service and ask the shop to adjust the TV cable for you. if it doesnt improve you either have something wrong with the motor or tranny. start a new thread so this guy can stay on his topic
