Hello Everyone,
I have a big problem and need help Quick. I recently picked up a 1999, 3.0,2wd Ranger with 80,000mi. Suddenly I have problems with the fuel shutting off randemly. I have replaced the fuel pump and filter. My wife has become very ill and I no longer have time to work on the truck myself. After the last fuel failure I took it to the shop. They tell me it is loose wires on the interia switch.
I thought that was fixed. This morning my daughter calls and the fuel shut off again on her way to school. I need this thing fixed now.
Has anyone had this type of problem?? should I replace the interia switch??
Unfortunatly I have not looked at it myself. Can anyone HELP?????
I had similar problems on my 03 and decided to go to the dealer to pick up a new inertia switch. Cost about 50 bucks and didnt take any time at all to change. Your connector may be melted from to much current. Kory
Armed with this new info, my father took a look at it. He removed the switch and tapped it with screwdriver. The ball in the switch was stuck. My daughter traveles alot of dirt roads. The switch must be real sensitive or defective. I am going to get a new switch at lunch.
I checked that when I first started having trouble. I just picked up a new switch and will replace that. It was $16.50 fro the dealer. I will double check the relay just in case.
The ball is supposed to be "stuck" in position. It takes a pretty hard impact to jostle it loose and to open the switch.. that's by design.
Usually when those switches go bad, it's an electrical connection problem, not an actual problem with the mechanics of the switch. You get a poor connection inside the switch, which causes it to heat up and melt at the connector. The 99 should set a "secondary fuel pump circuit" code if that is the case.
Good luck to you, I really hope this cures your problem!
