Before doing anything to the compressor, take it to a shop and have the ac system evacuated so there isn't any refrigerant or pressure in the system. Otherwise, nothing you really need to know.
It's not really the pressure that's unsafe, it's the refrigerant. And even that's not so bad as long as you don't inhale it.
Back before the days of ozone and atmospheric legislation, we used to use a hammer to depressurize A/C systems. Those days have long passed.
Remember that dumping refrigerant into the atmosphere is illegal. Even the R-134A, which is ozone friendly, is not supposed to be released. That's the major hazard. Your tires have higher pressures than the A/C system.
The pressure doesn't really matter. Get it done at a shop. The refridgerant is bad for the ozone and it is illeagal to release it. You need to be certified to work on a A/C system. Also it is extremely dangerous when this gas comes into contact with heat. If turns it into Fosgene (not sure of the spelling) gas, also known as mustard gas. It can also kill you as there isn't any oxygen in it and it is heavier than air.
