Fuel pump install problem
I have a 86 f250 i pulled the fuel pump off, and now can't get it back on. My book says " 1. The cam must be at its lowest position before attempting to install the fuel supply pump. 2. If it is difficult to start the mounting bolts, remove the pump and reinstall with a lever on the bottomside of the cam." How do I rotate my cam if i can't turn my engine over? How do I know what the lowest position of my cam is? What the hell does the second part of my directions mean? Thanks for putting up with the newbie!

The fuel pump arm rides on the bottom side of the eccentric. The second part is saying if the bolts won't start you may have the arm above the eccentric and need to pull it out and try again. Bump the engine a bit with the starter if the eccentric is down and trying to push on the arm while you are starting the bolts. Remember, a full turn on the engine is only 1/2 a revolution on the cam, so you may not notice a difference until you've bumped it a few times.

The Arm is on the fuel pump, if you look inside the place where the arm goes, you'll see a small part that the arm rides onto, just get the arm of the pump under this part and get a slightly longer length bolt and tighten it up little by little, remember that the bolts should go in easy with no resisting, after about doing it evenly, side by side, back out the longer bolts and reinstall the original bolts, be sure to install the gasket on the fuel pump so it won't leak oil there....then install your fuel lines.
