I am new to this forum and to diesel trucks in general. I just picked up a 99 F-250 7.3 Powerstroke. It has 85,000 original miles. I have heard a lot of different things from a lot of different people about fuel mileage on this truck, or on diesels in general. I have heard that the more miles you put on a diesel, the better fuel economy you will get. I have been told that i should be getting around 18 miles city, and 20 or more highway. I have also heard from some people that i need to get a hypertech or similar brand chip to program my computer to get better gas mileage. Does having your hubs locked make a difference on gas mileage? I just filled up the other day and calculated my mileage and only got about 15/gal. And more than half of the gas tank was used strickly on cruise on the highway at about 65-70 mph. Any tips on the best way to get good fuel economy?
yes, with the hubs locked you will have more moving parts(front axle, front driveline) will all be moving, so yes in my opinion this should decrease your milage. As for using a tuner/chip it also depends on what mods that your truck has installed. As for the best mpg keep the rpm's under 2000. Good luck with your new truck!
15-18 is about average. Not all that many folks get above 20 MPG, especially with 4x4's. Running with the hubs unlocked does help, and adding a chip or programmer can help if you keep your foot out of it. The key to good diesel economy is your right foot. Dirve it easy and keep the rpms down and the economy will improve. Not much fun but it's the only thing that really works. Proper tire pressure, synthetic fluids, and economy programming can all help, but in the end it always comes down to how you drive it.
