Need Some Ranger Advice
I might have the chance to buy a 1990 Ford Ranger 4x2. It's a long bed std. cab and I can fix just about everything that's wrong with it. Here's my question:
The truck has a 2.9 L V6 with the auto tranny. The auto tranny, every once in awhile, decides it'll shift into gear when it's good and ready. This may take several minutes somtimes. It usually doesn't do that, but every once in a while it will. Reverse gear is usually the gear it won't shift into.
I'd like to believe I can change the fluid/filter in the truck and the tranny will be just fine, but I don't know that for sure. Is this common on similar trucks, or is this one just a victim of poor maintainence? Is the auto tranny (and the 2.9 for this matter) any good? I'm lookin' at buying the truck for about $400-$500. I was going fix it up and sell it for around $1500 or so. I don't want to buy it if I'm going to have to put in a new transmission.
Thanks for reading and any advice is greatly appreciated.

I've already got one Ford with a similar transmission problem (I've learned the hard way patience is a virtue) and by the way things sound, I don't think I'm ready to take on another bad Ford tranny (no offense to Ford of course, they've just never made an auto tranny that "I" have seen that lasted over the 100,000 mark without any problems).
Maybe I'll try to move my dad's '88 Dodge Omni home so I can work on that. It's already bought, I know the history, and the tranny is good.
Thanks for all your input.
