Question How much coolant

How much coolant does the 7.3 coolant system take.
I am thinking about changing over to Evans coolant also how do you flush the entire coolant system is it the same as doing a gasser or is there a different way to flush a diesel.

well, it's spec'd to hold 31.75 quarts, or roughly 8 gallons. i've found that when you drain the radiator, that's about half of it. i flushed the coolant on my neighbor's truck when i did his oil cooler job.

since the Evans stuff is waterless, i dont know how youre going to get ALL of the water out of the motor, even pulling the drain plugs out of the block.

You will need a little over 7 gallons there is a link on the above page with how to do it. There are a few more hiding spots.

I went with rotella ELC (Red) due to the price of the evans

Thanks for all the info. Yes the Evans coolant is very expensive but it is the only one I have seen that you can put in the truck and not have to worry with any additives or testing every 4 to 6 months. Does anyone know of a cheaper waterless coolant.

Cool I think I will look in to the Rotella I would assume that the same process would be used to change to it as well since it is a different type coolant.

I also use the Rotella ELC. You do have to flush out the system very thoroughly before you put in the Rotella. What I did was flush out the motor and save the old antifreeze in the recycle barrel, then parked the truck over a floor drain, removed both block plugs on each side. Put a hose down the filler of the bottle, turn it on, start the engine and let it idle for a short while until I was positive there was no traces of the old green stuff left. Let it all drain out, you'll never get all the water out so don't sweat it. Reinstall the drain plugs, pour in four gallons of ELC and fill it the rest of the way with distilled water.

I got the premix but the procedure Kwikk stated is how I did it except instead of floor drain i had several drain pans and buckets. While you are in there you might want to consider replacing the thermostat housing the OEM is junk

here was mine at 82K:

And also replace the upper hose with one that goes around the belt (Dual Alt truck) instead of through it.

I will have to take a look at mine because my truck has 236,000 on it. Lucky for me I do have access to my shop at work with floor drains so that part should not be to bad. Also the dual alt. hose sounds like the way to go did not even know they anything different.

www.dieselsite.com has a nice billet alluminum housing

And since the coolant will last longer than the belt you dont have to remove the hose to change the belt

When I replace dmy waterpump, the only upper hose that Carquest sells is the dual alternator one. It really threw me for a loop till I figured it out. Boy I felt really smart then.

Wal mart sells a Final Charge that requires no additives as well. About $9/gal give or take. Just another option.
